Anime review: Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru

I don’t think anyone noticed this, but I posted some random tweets previous week about this anime. My comments about this while watching this around midnight. So, basically what happened there was that I react quite extremely towards products that contain extra sugar, like desserts and the like. So, I basically sort of got sugar-high, is what you can call it. I had dessert at 9pm and I was jumping around in my mind till 1:30am or something….. So ye, that’s what happens. I at least know what I can use if I need to study all night. That aside, well, I’ll try to remember what I wrote down that time in my tweets, cuz tbh, I kind of found it funny although I say it myself.

But let’s get over the facts. It’s originally a manga. It’s called in English ” The Betrayal Knows My Name” which sounds pretty vague and cool at the same time. I’m currently reading “Silver Diamond” which is from the same mangaka (Edit: I got it wrong, I meant the same mangaka from Ten Count, but that was a manga I read yesterday called “Seven Days”, sorry for the error. Basically confusing two things at the same time.) Got it recommended from someone. It got quite a big fanbase and I guess other things have like a drama CD and a live-action. And that’s literally everything I know.

Growing up as an orphan, Yuki Sakurai questions his reason for living and ability to see a person’s painful memory by simply touching them. After receiving anonymous notes telling him to die, Yuki is unable to shake off the nagging feeling forming inside of him. Unbeknownst to him, he is being watched, both by people who want to harm him and those who want to protect him.

One foggy night, Yuki’s life is saved by a beautiful man with silver eyes and jet black hair—a man he has never met before yet seems familiar. With the arrival of this mysterious stranger, Yuki’s forgotten past has been awakened and the purpose of his existence has appeared before him.

Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru tells the story of a teenage boy as he discovers who he is and where he comes from—all while making friends, experiencing betrayal, and slowly piecing together the puzzle of his past.

So let’s talk about the concept. It’s well thought of. Yuki, our protagonist feels a bit like an outsider. He meets some strange guy who’s the male lead and is quite vague. Then there’s a clan he apparently is part of and he needs to find his place in everyone while other people need to find a place by his side. With lots of magic and drama going on, it’s interesting to be thought of. It’s kind of an old trope which was really popular around that time I think? The demon gothic trope. I don’t have a lot of problems with it to be honest. I like the clothes design stuff, but most of these things didn’t end up too good. Mostly, they got overrated was the problem. And for me, it’s a bit the same. I thought that they could’ve done well, considering I read the manga a few days before that too, but it was quite disappointing and all. It felt really flat and repetitive.

And that leads towards the story. It’s mostly the side characters being very unsure about their position beside Yuki. The most said line of the anime was “Yuki…” or “Yuki!”. The first one was mainly said by Luka and the other one by the side characters when he disappeared, got in trouble or fainted. Yuki is basically your weak heroine but then in male form. I don’t try to be discriminating or anything, but it’s mostly done with heroines and that’s undeniable. The heroine needs help and the side characters + the overpowered male lead will help her. Well, the only difference would be that Yuki is a guy who was a girl in his past life. And that’s it. Also, no there’s actually almost no plot. I’m being kind I think with saying this. There’s just this tries to accept the truth -> gets the heart of one of the side characters -> learns truth -> swallows truth while saving another side character -> learns more truth -> etc. So yeah, this is the whole pattern and there’s nothing more to it. Most things about struggles at side characters are basically about not being needed anymore and wanting to die or only one true goal which leads to death.

The characters. Ahhh, loved their designs though. I was constantly looking at the hair as I was thinking that I sort of try to draw the same, just that this is waayyyyyyyyyyy better than my puny drawing….. Still, it’s a bit of the style I want to have with the hair. I especially liked Tsukumo’s hair. It’s the kind of hair I tried to draw with one of my OC’s but kinda failed with it. Anyways, ye, characters are kinda flat in my opinion. I mean, they don’t have a lot of personality and the only thing that can change in terms of character development is their liking to Yuki. That’s it yeah. Also, Sakurai voiced Luka… Uwahh, I like this seiyuu a lot. He’s a funny man. Miyano Mamoru voiced Shuusei which I literally only read now while writing this. I literally don’t notice him for some reason except when it’s pointed out….. Well, whatever. Other voice actors did a great job though. My fav character was Tsukumo, who was literally always eating something before they had breakfast XD. Actually, he’s almost always eating some snack.Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru theme 1

I liked the animation and design, good concept but badly developed, which makes it a 5/10. I did like some things in the anime, but it was so cringe for me. They said a lot “Omae wa…” and that was literally it. So I once said “Mo shindeiru” super loud and I was like ‘oh gawsh, why did I say this?’ and lit headbanged against my desk before continuing on with the anime. I was lucky that I was alone at that time. Or when they said “Yuki…” I was asking myself how many times they did say it already. When Yui began to say “Luka…” a lot too I couldn’t help but facepalm. It also says shounen-ai, but for those who don’t like it, there’s lit only just some under the table hints of that and isn’t really explicitly said and it isn’t like hatsukoi or junjou so no worries. My last comment about the art though…. damn they have long necks…. >.>

So yeah, that was it really for this week. And now, I wrote this literally 2-3 hours before i have to go to school for an exam so rip. Anyways, laters.
