Anime review: Gakusen Toshi Asterisk

Hello people. As I write right now it’s a few hours before actually publish this post. Lol, I completely forgot yesterday and the rest I was literally just procrastinating as usual (pls me, I beg you to finish it once in time). Anyways, this was a fairly popular anime I think. 2015, eh? I think that’s the first year I began watching anime for real. I said this once in one of my previous reviews too (like one of the first review (aka Divine Gate prob)). That aside, I should start by introducing this one.

I originally came to this anime, because of the cover (and I didn’t understand what ecchi meant at the time). It sounded interesting to watch and I followed it. The first thing I noticed was that the music sounded cool. Good for me, I still have it on my phone.

Second, some fact (sorry for that m(_ _)m) it has currently as I write this, a game, 14 light novel volumes, 2 anime seasons and 5 anime volumes. Aniplex is one of the studio’s which has worked on the anime and somewhat one of the few I can remember the name of myself. And this was the background information, going to the next part!

Long, long ago, an epic catastrophe, known as Invertia, caused a complete change in the world’s power balance. In the years following this disaster, a group known as the Integrated Enterprise Foundation rose to power. In addition to this massive change, a new breed of humans born with amazing physical skills known as Genestella also emerged and joined the ranks of humanity.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk follows the story of Ayato Amagiri, a student who has just transferred into one of the six most elite schools for Genestella students in the world—Seidoukan Academy—where students learn to control their powers and duel against each other in entertainment battles known as festas. Unfortunately, Ayato gets off to a rough start. When trying to return a lost handkerchief to a female classmate, he accidentally sees her changing which leads to her challenging him to a duel. What most people don’t realize however, is that Ayato has no real interest in festas and instead has an alternative motive for joining this prestigious school. What is Ayato’s big secret? Will he be able to keep up his act when surrounded by some of the greatest Genestella in the world?

If I were to be honest, I quite liked it. It’s a fairly good one. But that’s only looking at me being a brainless newbie in watching anime (and thinking almost everything was nice at that time). Let’s look at the world itself. It was quite nicely built. Though it was very open, so you could add and clarify every action pretty easily. It was good that it was open, but you literally could rectify almost every action of the protagonist. Oh please, give him something that he’s wrong in too. But that’s me complaining about needing some flaws in the protagonist, Second thing, experience ->

I thought the name was okay and seem cool, but after watching, I felt like (//O.O//). Now thinking about it, it made no real sense and is one of the most idiotic actions someone could’ve done. Well, I liked the battles, wasn’t the most thing with actions, but the weapons seem cool at least.

The originality isn’t really there, you could predict almost everything that would happen and the only thing that was maybe a bit surprising was when a new character came in you don’t know a thing about. But that’s pretty logical I think.

The character built was ok with the girls. A bit of stereotype, but I guess it can’t hurt that much. The protagonist is some classic guy, who has experienced a setback, although little, and is currently living a pretty good stable life. The only flaw may be that he’s shy, but that’s it. At least he’s not a totally brainless and reckless boy. The issue with his strength isn’t bad. It is a good issue to reason with. So all in all, okay with characters.

The story itself wasn’t bad, but can’t call it entirely good either. It was pretty lousy and the girls, because of the harem tag, were almost immediately sucking good will up from the protagonist. Maybe it would’ve been nice if it went slower, but that is in my opinion. It went on a fairly good pace. I can’t really think much deeper in the story so I thought it was ok.

So combining everything together, I think I come onto a 7,5/10. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t entirely good either. So, it was enjoyable enough for me. But 1. I was brainless anime viewer at the time and 2. can’t remember the details now. I think it’s good, but not the most memorable. Because I quite enjoyed it at that time, I give it somewhat higher than I expected to give. And the opening is really good! I like the song a lot. But the naming sense is most of the time German or it sounds like that. Why?! Like, I understand German fairly good so some names are a no-go to me.

Wow, I just wrote quite some words. About 600 I think? Woohoo, finally made a long review again. Only thing is that I wrote quite messily. Whoops, I did some things at the same time too (lousy excuse *slaps herself*). Anyways, that was my review. Lol, it’s already 9:30am here when I finish this. See you later!
